Christmas is the safest holiday to drive, according to AutoInsurance.org analysis

  • Memorial Day and Labor Day were the deadliest holidays
  • Christmas and Ash Wednesday were the least lethal
  • There were 974 fatal accidents during the Christmas holiday period during our three-year study period
  • That’s 12.4% below the holiday average

Christmas took the top spot this year for Safest Holidays, but it hasn’t always been one of the safest vacations to drive. In 2016, the first year AutoInsurance.org conducted this study, Christmas didn’t even land in the top five for the safest vacations. But over the years it has become more secure. During the last two years of the study, Christmas was the safest holiday to drive.

The study also found that drunk driving accounted for up to 38% of fatal accidents during vacations, while up to 52% of road fatalities during vacations involved someone not using a vehicle. seatbelt.

Laura adams, MBA and nationally recognized financial expert with AutoInsurance.org, says, “Peak traffic, drunk driving and stressed drivers all contribute to road hazards while on vacation. Even though our study found that Christmas is a relatively safe holiday, there are still 325 fatal accidents during this holiday period per year. Drivers should therefore be careful, avoid distractions and insist that everyone in their vehicle wear seat belts. “

Adams also mentions that avoiding accidents and tickets is one of the best ways to keep your car insurance premium from going up. “Insurers reward drivers with clean records because they are less risky. This means good drivers are entitled to discounts and enjoy big savings.”

In addition to avoiding distracted driving, safety experts suggest planning accordingly before hitting the road. Check your route in advance and allow yourself extra time in case the roads get more congested. Be alert and take breaks if you are tired. Experts also suggest making sure that your auto insurance is up to date and that you have all the necessary paperwork in your car, like your auto insurance card and vehicle registration.
