Pennsylvania 6th state with most student loan debt, study finds – CBS Philly


PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – While student loan cancellation remains a hot topic in the United States, a new study finds Pennsylvania ranked among the top 10 states with the most people with student loan debt. Pennsylvania ranked 6th in AdvisorSmith’s Highest Student Debt Study.

The study analyzed the 50 states plus Washington DC using data from the US Department of Education. AdvisorSmith has separated student loan debt into two categories, states with the highest student loan balances and states with the most outstanding student loans.

Pennsylvania was in 20th place for highest student loan balances.

The researchers found that 14% of Pennsylvania’s population had an unpaid federal student loan and that the average loan balance in the Commonwealth was $ 35,804.

According to the study, at the end of June, the average student debt held in the federal student loan portfolio was $ 37,861 per borrower.

Delaware ranked 12th for highest student loan balances and 30th for most people with student loan debt. New Jersey ranked # 21 for highest student loan balances and # 19 for most people with student loan debt.
